DAAF PANEL DISCUSSION – A new event to DAAF 2016

Our panel discussion was yet another new event that was created to celebrate DAAF’s 10th Anniversary!

The topic  “What is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art” generated robust discussions and encouraged the audience to think deeply about the very constructs of Indigenous art. Our own Franchesca Cubillo moderated the conversation which was animated by panelists including: Cecilia Alfonso (Warlukurlangu Artists Manager), Paul Johnstone (Paul Johnstone Gallery, Darwin), Nici Cumpston (Indigenous Curator at the Art Gallery of South Australia) and Patricia Adjei (Copyright Agency).

Attendees enjoyed stimulating discourse over breakfast prior to Fair’s doors opening to the public on Saturday, 6th August 2016. This was an incredible effort for those who had celebrated the NATSIAA and DAAF Fashion Show well into night before! Many questions and issues were raised about the current state of the market and the importance of Indigenous involvement in curating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.  Conversations about these topics are ongoing! Due to the fantastic interest and engagement of participants in this event, it is set to become a regular event in the DAAF program.

A huge thank you to Wesfarmers Arts for sponsoring the event!
